The Hidden Life Of Trees by Peter Wohllenben

Seeds develop a better resistance to frost or draught according to flowering conditions

"Shortly after fertilization, when the seeds are ripening in the flower, they react to environmental conditions. If it is particularly warm and dry, appropriate genes are activated. Scientists have proved that under these conditions, spruce seedlings are able to tolerate warm weather - though they lose the same measure in frost resistance.⁶³"

Wild plants communicate to fight insects more efficiently together

"The fungal connections transmit signals from one tree to the next, helping the trees exchange news about insects, drought, and other dangers. ⁹ [...] In the symbiotic community of the forest, not only trees but also shrubs and grasses - and possibly all plant species - exchange information this way. However, when we step into farm fields, the vegetation becomes very quiet. Thanks to selective breeding, our cultivated plants have, for the most part, lost their ability to communicate above or below ground. Isolated by their silence, they are easy prey for insect pests.¹² [...] Perhaps farmers can learn from the forests and breed a little more wildness back into their grain and patatoes so that they'll become more talkative in the future."
